Poverty is an effect, to solve a problem one must address the "cause."

To truly address poverty we need to recognize that it is the result of all the other inter-dependent sectors of life, from education to health care, access to technology and natural resources, most importantly what Human Rights you have.

There are many kinds of poverty, the causes of which vary depending on where you're looking, a rich country or a poor county. 

As we enter the Information Age, humanity has real potential to address the "causes of poverty" in both rich and poor countries alike. The technological fixes available are the easy part, the hard part is having a cooperative spirit with greater respect for the Human Rights of a diverse humanity, if we can achieve that we will succeed in all that follows.
In poorer countries practical coordinated action needs to be taken to;

• Improve supplies of clean water, to reduce time spent gathering often foul water and reduce illness caused by foul water supplies.
• Improve the supply of accessible, affordable health care information and services, to reduce the vulnerability to disease of children and the elderly especially.
• Improve training and equipment of farmers in poor countries related to agriculture and natural resource management, include help with seeds and expertise from groups like ECHO.
• Increase access to education in combination with Information Age technology such as computers, ICT Systems, and cell phones via communty Access Points.
• Relieve countries of the "Interest" charged on their debt, and reduce debt.
• Help governments to outside help sustainable development help for non-governmental organizations, non-profits, and health missionaries.

In richer countries coordinated action should be taken to;

• Improve the quality of educational opportunities and incentives with emphasis on the poor.
• Increase diplomacy, international cooperation, and sustainable trade options to decrease necessity of future growing military expenditure. Make friends of foes, now the world is so interdependent we must cooperate; as individuals we do it all the time, now our governments acting as our collective voice needs to pursue options that lead to greater Peace. 
  
• Improve work training and apprenticeship incentives for the poor to focus on new Information Age opportunities. Using the Internet an individual can now get a job with someone else or work for themselves by offering their knowledge, art, music, and time. The industrial age is coming to a close, we need to educate for the new world because the factory jobs in places like Detroit are not coming back; we need to train for the present and future.
  
• Increase the use of local exchange systems in communities to increase recycling, keep more wealth in the local economy for it's development, and stregthen community ties between the living people creating or growing available goods.

 Paulownia Reforestation Project (“PRP”)

Purpose: The purpose of the Paulownia Reforestation Project (“PRP”) is the achievement of global reforestation through Project Partnering in the application and development of environmentally sustainable agro-forestry and silviculture practices that demonstrate economic self-sufficiency. Additionally, we offer a viable solution to Global Warming via the miracle Paulownia Tree.

Method:

Regionalized Propagation Nurseries

The heart of the PRP plant genetics and propagation technology was originally developed over two decades at a research and development Paulownia nursery in Rosedale, California. The propagation stocks, which are cloned from tissue cultures developed in California, will be produced at regional propagation nurseries such as our Kauai, Hawaii headquarters. All of the new starts required within a region will be produced in close proximity to where reforestation projects are being established. Stocks from regional propagation nurseries will then be transferred for planting to the PRP Field Services group assisting a non-profit or commercial alliance partner.

The PRP headquarter nursery, and SAFE training facility has been established in the South Pacific with a fully functioning propagation nursery. PRP envisions establishing numerous regional propagation nurseries within the first 2 years of the program, established through it's partner project S.A.F.E. (Sustainable Alternative Farming Experience) with a minimum of seven in the United States and a minimum of eight international facilities.

Regionalized Field Services

Once the tree stocks have been prepared for planting at the regional nurseries, it is essential that a qualified team is on-site to assure the success of reforestation efforts. PRP will assemble regionalized on-site teams under the heading of Field Services. These teams will be responsible for the shoulder-to-shoulder relationships with growers, providing hands-on training as well as organizational support.

Proactive Reforestation

Our reforestation goals will be achieved through myriad applications of the Paulownia tree, an extraordinary natural resource with a recorded history dating back to 500 BC in China .

The techniques used by the PRP will reclaim deforested, desert, and degraded lands while simultaneously relieving pressure upon local and indigenous forests. Additionally, jobs will be created that invigorate the environment through the production of sustainable sources of wood and food (via inter-cropping with Paulownia). Paulownia is applied in two areas where efforts of reforestation are mutually beneficial to the local and global communities. These areas are:

1. Non-Profit Alliances ~ 15+ Million Trees: PRP Paulownia tree stocks, produced at regionalized propagation nurseries, and training programs, timber farm and native reforestation technologies, provided by PRP Field Services, will be donated to strategic planting partners worldwide in order to accelerate global reforestation.

Additionally, PRP tree stocks and technical services will be donated directly to tragedy relief groups through the UN and other organizations dedicated to land remediation through reforestation. Our relationship with Peace Portal, P3, and Worldwide Developers Foundation provides the organic benefit to PRP of ongoing alliances with like-minded, globally active, non-profit partners.

Many of our alliance partners have a proven track record in reforestation and maintain an active presence in the geographic and cultural area(s) of their interest.

Initially, via these alliances, PRP will export and donate inventory, facilities, and expertise, as in-kind goods and services, to areas of need worldwide.

Ultimately, the same PRP Paulownia tree stocks, training programs, nurseries, timber farm and native reforestation technologies will be provided to other groups, such as, Amerindians, their indigenous global counterparts, as well as inner-city programs.

2. Commercial Alliances (RLP Fund) ~ 10+ Million Trees: The impetus for introducing reforestation into the commerce of a region is based upon the need to produce timber products locally, thus stimulating local economics and removing pressure from native and reclaimed forestry preserves.

PRP will stimulate proactive reforestation efforts by providing a Revolving Loan Program (“RLP”) in areas where indigenous people have limited or no timber resources and where farmers contend with depressed agricultural conditions. The self-liquidating RLP loans will be applied to preparing lands and providing training where commercial joint-venture timber farms and plantations consist of fast-growing Paulownia.

As may be appropriate in individual regions, inter-cropping with Paulownia may be applied to the development of fruit and nut orchards as well as more traditional food-source crops. Loan recipients begin repayment with their first timber harvest, often occurring after the first year’s growth due to Paulownia’s ability to regenerate with straighter, faster growth after coppicing (cutting at ground level).

These repayments will be used to maintain the RLP Fund and to produce additional tree stocks, thereby enabling additional RLP allotments and expanding the program to other regions. This process offers significant cultural and economic gains to local communities and their farmers, and simultaneously, increases the number of trees on the planet, heals localized environmental scars, and provides a path toward environmental sustainability.

CO2 Emissions

Our goal is to respond to global warming emergency and build toward a sustainable future. Greenhouse gas emissions are on the rise and concentration of CO2 and other thermally active gases in the atmosphere are increasing. If the warming trend continues and CO2 emissions are not addressed global climate change could result.

Several types of policy instruments have been offered for consideration in the attempt to exercise control over this threat.

Examples include: CO2 taxes for big CO2 producing corporations, CO2 credits and subsidies for the use of non-fossil fuels, etc. Many of these are directed toward national emission reductions to fulfill the requirements of the Kyoto Protocol. Global scale reductions in greenhouse gases and CO2 emissions are the aim of policies to achieve abatement of the potent impacts of global warming.

"This is a good step however counties that have excessively high emissions are not responding and reduction is simply not enough to call the Kyoto protocol a solution for global warming."

CO2 credits do not accomplish the actual sequestration of CO2 and other harmful gases and dusts emitted into the our daily air supply and atmosphere.

We understand the process of CO2 sequestration and feel the Kyoto protocol is at best a valiant effort towards our global urgency to reduce and sequester CO2 and other harmful gases and dusts.

To further the CO2 credits frenzy is to mask the problem. (This is simply not enough) We need a global reforestation initiation and a global protocol that works.

The only solution is to sequester the CO2 and harmful gases and dusts directly out of the air through tree planting and production of low emission fuels. We need to direct the attention toward high CO2 sink points and out put areas around the globe.

Initiate global reforestation and cut Global emissions A.S.A.P.

Paulownia is the highest CO2 exchange tree available.

We are networking and conducting a complete study of planetary thermodynamics (heat studies) and meteorology (weather studies) to find specific locations for paulownia tree planting projects.

And we invite anyone with knowledge in these fields to help this process develop into a strategic plan.

The principle objective of the GaiaTech EcoVillage (“GTV”) is to demonstrate practices that ensure a high quality of life for village participants while ensuring locally sustainable development, conservation of the bio-diversity of natural resources, and self-sustainability through social, economic, geologic, and climatic changes.

A further objective of GTV is the substantive exchange, give-away, and transfer of empirically tested practices or technologies which produce skills that ensure the development and sustainability of its social, economic and environmental attributes.

The development of these sustainable technologies is envisioned to provide for their expansion to a greater part of the Planet. Various village humanitarian and commercial organizations will accomplish this objective through interdependent development, education, local induction of self-sustainable and ecologically sensitive technologies, practices, and products for application in rural and urban settings of need worldwide.

“Quality of Life”, these concepts are specifically defined and provide a criterion to which all practices should adhere.

¨ Weave together into one fabric, all aspects of village living, including; housing, energy, health assurance, education, commerce, agriculture, cottage industry, recreation, and culture
¨ Promote the ability of the individual to experience a quality life of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual fulfillment
¨ Meet every aspect of the definition of "Sustainability"

Sustainability:

Meeting "the needs of present life-forms in a healthy manner without compromising the ability of future generations of all life forms to meet their own needs." Specifically, activities are defined by GTV as sustainable when they meet the following criteria:
¨ Use materials in continuous cycles
¨ Use renewable and reliable sources of energy

¨ Are primarily founded upon the qualities of being human (i.e. creativity, communication, coordination, appreciation, and spiritual and intellectual development.)
