Disney-Pixar's New Eco-Themed Movie
This afternoon my husband and I went to see the movie JUNO, which was GREAT by the way. We had the opportunity to catch some of the trailers for upcoming movies and we saw a trailer for a computer animated science fiction film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and release by Walt Disney Pictures called WALL-E.
WALL-E (short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-class) is the story of the last little robot on Earth. WALL-E was programmed to help clean up earth because in the future humans have completely trashed the planet through consumerism, rampant, unchecked consumerism. The Earth was covered with so much trash that the humans had to leave the planet on space liners while robots were left behind to clean up the planet and make Earth habitable again. Unfortunately 700 years go by and the humans never return.
WALL-E is not so much a story about science fiction, but rather a love story. WALL-E falls in love with EVE, a robot from a probe that comes down to check on Earth. WALL-E attempts to woo her and EVE comes to realize that WALL-E has inadvertently stumbled upon the key to the planet's future and his efforts just might be what ends up restoring the human race to its former glory.
I love to see movies with environmental themes for children because it is so important to get them thinking about these issues at a young age. Plus, you know there is going to be a parent sitting next to the child in the theater who may need a wake-up call themselves. I know there were a few children movies out last year that had a ‘green‘ theme like Artic Tale, and The Simpsons Movie. Not having children myself, I never made it to the theater to see them, but I plan on renting them now that they are available on DVD. I think WALL-E might even draw me to a theater instead of waiting for the DVD. Maybe I will borrow a few kids to bring along with me.
Let’s hope that WALL-E is a huge successful for Disney-Pixar Studios like some of their other films like Ratatouille, Cars and Finding Nemo. Plus, I hope we will see many more environmental films for children in the future.
