Take Action - Elected Officials

As an elected official, you can steer your city, state or country away from fossil fuels and toward renewable energy. We will post here a 100 day plan for action on climate change as well as a program for Sustainability Within a Generation.

1.The Mayors Taking Action
Douglas H. Palmer, Mayor of Trenton and President of The U.S. Conference of Mayors and Conference Executive Director Tom Cochran officially launched The U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Center on February 20, 2007 in recognition of an increasingly urgent need to provide mayors with the guidance and assistance they need to lead their cities’ efforts to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that are linked to climate change. Throughout the nation there is clear evidence that mayoral leadership is producing business and community support for policies that reduce emissions. While progress is already being made in many cities, our goal must be to increase the number of cities involved in the effort, and to equip all cities with the knowledge and tools that ultimately will have the greatest impact on undo the causes of global warming.

2. Green Cities
C40 is a group of the world's largest cities committed to tackling climate change. On this website you will find news and updates on current C40 programmes, information about each of the cities involved, and links to useful documents.

In December 2006, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg challenged New Yorkers to generate ideas for achieving 10 key goals for the city's sustainable future. New Yorkers in all five boroughs responded. The result is the most sweeping plan to enhance New York's urban environment in the city's modern history.

3. States Unite To Reduce Carbon
The Climate Northeast partnership builds strategies for companies to thrive in a carbon-constrained economy. Partners develop greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, share energy management practices and invest in clean energy technologies. These corporate actions shape multi-sectoral policy approaches for a safe climate and sound business future in the Northeast.

4. Non-partisan Guidance for Policy Makers
U.S. Climate Change Policy WRI provides independent, non-partisan expertise and guidance to policymakers on climate change technology, business engagement, policy design and international issues.

5. Local Governments
ICLEI—Local Governments for Sustainability is an international association of local governments and national and regional local government organizations that have made a commitment to sustainable development. More than 630 cities, towns, counties, and their associations worldwide comprise ICLEI's growing membership. ICLEI works with these and hundreds of other local governments through international performance-based, results-oriented campaigns and programs.

6. Greening the Work Force
The Apollo Alliance for Good Jobs and Clean Energy provides a message of optimism and hope, framed around rejuvenating our nation's economy by creating the next generation of American industrial jobs and treating clean energy as an economic and security mandate to rebuild America. America needs to hope again, to dream again, to think big, and to be called to the best of our potential by tapping the optimism and can-do spirit that is embedded in our nation's history.

7. Regional Alliances
The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, or RGGI, is a cooperative effort by Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states to reduce carbon dioxide emissions –- a greenhouse gas that causes global warming. Climate change is expected to raise sea level, change precipitation and impact other local climate conditions. Changing regional climate could alter forests, crop yields, and water supplies. It could also affect human health, animals, and many types of ecosystems.

8. Policy Advice
The Climate Registry is a collaboration between states, provinces and tribes aimed at developing and managing a common greenhouse gas emissions reporting system with high integrity that is capable of supporting various greenhouse gas emission reporting and reduction policies for its member states and tribes and reporting entities. It will provide an accurate, complete, consistent, transparent and verified set of greenhouse gas emissions data from reporting entities, supported by a robust accounting and verification infrastructure.

9. Clinton Foundation
Building on his long-term commitment to preserving the environment, President Clinton launched the Clinton Foundation's Climate Initiative (CCI) in August 2006 with the mission of applying the Foundation's business-oriented approach to the fight against climate change in practical, measurable and significant ways.

10. Climate Exchange - AB32
(May 2007) Chicago Climate Exchange, Inc.® (CCX®) announced today that it is forming the California Climate Exchange™ (CaCX™) to develop and trade financial instruments relevant to the California Global Warming Solutions Act, AB32, recently signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, which calls for a mandatory reduction in California's greenhouse gas emissions as of 2012, with mandatory reporting of emissions to commence in 2008.
