Open Letter to Leonardo DiCaprio

Dear Leonardo,

I love you, man. I love the way you brought Rose back to life on the Titanic. I love the way you pushed yourself and your people to do the impossible as Howard Hughes The Aviator. I love the way you died in Blood Diamond. Most of all, I love that you took a stand for saying what needs to be said in 11th Hour.

And here is where I want to land a distinction in you. Being sincere is not the equivalent of being authentic. In 11th Hour you were sincere. You were not authentic.

If you were authentic the viewer would come away feeling what truly moved you to make the film in the first place. You did not reveal the truth of that for us. We long for someone to speak the truth to us about what is going on in the world.

I would love to have you do a re-release, a director’s cut, that blows people out of the water with your authentic truth. You know, if it all comes down like it looks like it’s going to come down (see www.just-stop.org), what have you got to lose? It will all be gone anyway, so why not take the risk to say it like you feel it?

If you dared to tell your authentic truth with this film, then even in the opening scenes you would be sobbing. You know this. We are so sad that the polar bears are drowning, but no one will help us to feel this. You could. Your fear of losing modern civilization would pour out through your heart into ours so we could have the courage to change our behavior before it is too late. I want there to be movies for my great grandchildren to see. I love movies.  Your rage at our stupidity would sear the consequences of greed and denial into our nerves so we would be forced to wake up to what we are doing by not doing anything differently.

What drove you to make 11th Hour is your love for the possibility of humanity and for the miracle and beauty of the Earth. We know this. Please let us feel this. Please let’s make 11th Hour again with the real you in it, the man who stands for hope for all of us. You can do this. We can help you.

My Awarness and Action

It's been a week or so now since I've watched the film and have had to let this new information sink in. Over the past few years I have been coming across little bit's of info here and there like Gore's film and a host of things on public access. After having all this new info rolling around in my brain I can't help feeling the need to do something.

Truth be known, I have been just has hard on our environment as most and in some really selfess ways at that. Buying bags and bags of plastic ware and stacks of paper plates so I don't have to do dishes. But I am going to stop that for the most part buy reusing them until they break. Also, I have an idea to for the most part to stop using paper towels and replace them with reusable cotton clothes. I have a host of other ideas that I will write about later, but for now I have to go to work.

Pathetic Attendance

On Earth Day (This Past tuesday)

The Texas A&M University at Kingsville had a free showing of the 11th hour movie on campus.

At University of over 6,000 students, only three students showed up to watch the movie!!!!

It was my first time seeing the 11th hour. The movie is very moving and thought provoking.

But Given the apathy on my campus for things such as the environmental movement, makes me really think that mankind is doomed to destroy itself in ingnorance of our consumer life style.

Finally got to see 11th Hour again

Finally my copy of the 11th Hour DVD arrived and just have to write and say I was 'blown away' all over again watching it for the third time.  It is a very hard hitting film with so many hard facts and bit political in the middle but I do love that ending and the vision of what we could become.  That vision has been part of me for all my life even though the reality of life has been so different.  But so comforting to know there are other people with that vision, many other people.  Still really believe we will get there some day.  Think the whole secret of learning to bond with our planet is to trying growing something.  A flower, a tree or a vegetable.  Just making that contact with the soil and watching that plant or tree grow.  Then you really understand what a miraculous planet we live on.  Good luck and I just hope one EVERYONE watches the 11th Hour.

Our solar panels are still working well heating our water for free and the wood burner is heating on cloudy days.  Our environment is cleaner and we are healthier I think.

The 11th Hour DVD….Play It Forward

Wow! Wow! The 11th Hour DVD costs only $4.99. THANK YOU very much for making it so affordable. With such an incredibly LOW price, now there is only one thing to do…Play It Forward.

I gave out gift certificates this past holiday season promising to buy some friends and family The 11th Hour DVD when it comes out this spring. At the time I thought the DVD would cost at least $15.00. So now I can buy three times as many, and give them to people that I did not have on my original holiday gift list. I will forward on all these extra DVD’s to people along with a note card saying…

In celebration of Earth Day, April 22nd, I am forwarding you
The 11th Hour DVD.
Please PLAY IT, and then please FORWARD it on to others.

The intention of this Play It Forward is to get as many people as possible to see this documentary.
Please keep this DVD traveling from home to home.
Thank You

Leo & Knut Photo Caption Contest

                 Leo and Knut Just Chillin’

I was reading a Leonardo DiCaprio interview that was featured today on The Daily Green website, which reminded me that last week I had entered a Photo Caption Contest on Ecorazzi. The contest involved writing a caption to go along with the above photo of Leo and Knut. For those of you who may not know, this picture appeared on the cover of the May 2007 Green issue of Vanity Fair magazine. This Green issue featured Global Citizens, and Leo was named The Man of the Hour for all his environmental activism.

I admit there are days that I have WAY TOO MUCH time on my hands, LOL, but I always find interesting ways of filling up my free time instead of spending that time shopping for things I don’t need. So I spent some of my free time racking my brain coming up with captions for the photo. I came up with a several different captions, and tried to tie in what was said in the The 11th Hour to the picture. I decided to submit the shortest caption that I wrote instead of my favorite one.

The winner receives a copy of The Green Book, The Everyday Guide to Saving the Planet One Simple Step at a Time, which includes a forward by Cameron Diaz and 11th Hour film expert, William McDonough. I did not enter the contest to win the book, because I already own a copy.

I just checked over at Ecorazzi and they have not yet picked a winner, so there is still time to submit an entry if you wish.

Here is the caption I submitted. I was trying to use the two different definitions for the word ‘brink.’ (1) verge of something crucial: the crucial point in a situation, (2) edge of something: the very edge of something such as a steep drop or riverbank.

KNUT: So, we find ourselves on the brink. YES! The brink of melting ice.

Here are the OTHER captions I thought of submitting.

KNUT: The first thing you can do to ‘Turn Mankind’s Darkest Hour into Its Finest’ is
HELP get me designated as a threatened species.

KNUT: Hey Leo, it looks like you face a convergence of crises. The crises being that you are standing on a piece of melting Artic sea ice, and your boat has gone and left you here.

KNUT: The evidence is now clear…The water is freezing and you look a little temperature sensitive.

KNUT: Some may still deny that we are at an environmental age, but no one can deny that I am at a CUTE age.

KNUT: Leo, it must be NICE being named Vanity Fair’s “Man of the Hour” for all your environmental activism. How do you think I feel being named the unfortunate Poster Child for global warming?

KNUT: I hear that The 11th Hour is a story about how humans face an extinction crisis if you continue on the path of business as usual. On second thought, maybe one of you humans should be the poster child for the potential ravages of future global warming.
.
KNUT: Look at me, I’m adorable. How can the Bush administration not have the heart to list me as a threatened species?

KNUT: Maybe the Bush administration is confused. Polar bears are a threatened species, not a threatening species

KNUT: You humans should Consume Less, Live More. But for us polar bears, if we CONSUME any LESS food, we will not be LIVING much MORE.

KNUT: Nice Jacket you have on Leo. I love that it’s an environmentally friendly blend of organic hemp and recycled polyester.

KNUT: Leo, will your pivotal generation create a sustainable world in time for me to celebrate my 1st Birthday? I sure hope so, there’s going to be cake!

KNUT: I may be a registered trademark and the center of a mass media phenomenon, but the HOPE is YOU.

LEO: It’s not just the 11th hour, but it is 11:59 and 59 seconds.
KNUT: Hopefully the alarm clock will go off soon and wake up all the sleeping humans.

LEO: It’s an exciting time to be alive because this generation gets to completely change this world.
KNUT: Yes, change the world, but keep the chocolate.

Here are a few I thought of just for laughs that are really silly.

KNUT: Can you get Scorsese to give me a part in his next movie?

KNUT: What is it with you and icebergs?

KNUT: There’s something about you that gives me a ‘Sinking’ feeling in my stomach.

KNUT: Heck, you thought Leo-mania was big, that’s nothing compared to the huge phenomenon that is Knut-mania.

See, I wasn’t lying when I said I have way too much free time.
