SOL tech meets NO tech

There's a wealth of knowledge to be learnt from those who live off the land & are in sync with nature. My friend Andy, a volunteer photographer for the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) recently spent a stint with such people, deep in the interior of Sarawak (the north western region of Borneo island ) Note that "deep interior" also means 200+ satellite TV channels in some settlements. Kinda funny really. Them watching Nat Geo watching themselves... He used one of our chargers to keep his DSLR camera & portable card reader/ storage unit running while he documented his findings on behalf of the MNS.

Locals getting a closer look at Andy's charger

These natives who, not too long ago, just threw away a radio when the batteries died, were fascinated by the idea that you could get ELECTRICITY FROM THE SUN. (they're not the only ones).  Strangely ( or perhaps NOT so strangely), they grasped the concept quite easily.  They currently run small diesel generators sparingly to power up their homes, a few hours a night.

For them the sun is part of life and their way of life. It governs the ebb & flow of seasons & time. Why shouldn't it give a source of daily energy?

Andy spends time with these people to remind himself ( and his friends, like me ) about what really matters in life & that we REALLY should stop & smell the flowers.

Have a great day!

Saving the planet one day at a time.

Urban Community Farming

Status:
In Progress
Description:

I have recently submitted an idea to the Obama campaign to begin encouraging and subsidizing a communal urban farming effort. The basis of this idea is that blocks or neighborhoods will be able to organize in order to provide produce for themselves and others in their area. Each household (that volunteers) on a block will have their soil analyzed by an agricultural or horticultural program graduate and will grow a certain fruit(s) or vegetable(s). Other households on the block (or in the neighborhood) would be the canneries. The government could subsidize the purchase of heirloom seeds, the salary of the agricultural/horticultural experts, and the equipment needed for canning and drying the foodstuffs. Only the volunteer participants would reap the benefits of the program.

I believe a program like this will not only help reduce the emissions generated from transporting produce hundreds of miles (thousands in the winter) but will also prevent possible food riots and violence should the future fuel supply become so scarce that it is eventually for government and military use only. If we start practicing now, we will all be pros before we need to be.

Free Power, Bug Free

Description:

Pink Guava juice is high in vitamins & nutrition.  What isn't welcome is a high concentration of pesticides.  The plantation management decided on a reduction in pesticides ( & ultimately elimination) with a simple & effective method.  Strategically place a lamp in the middle of the field to attract the pests at night, let them buzz themselves to death flying around the lamp.  Dead from exhaustion, the insects are simply dumped out the next day from the collection bin below the lamp.  The remains are also examined for the type of pests caught & those that were not attracted to the lamp.

Neat idea, except that the battery running the lamp needed to be charged daily and it isn't light (pun intended) We helped add a solar panel system to the unit.  It now works everyday without having to have its battery carried back and forth,to be recharged, much to workers' relief.  The plantation is now trying variations on the original design to build better insect traps.

All this so that they can proudly proclaim on their bottles "Pesticide Free!" .... artificial flavours not inlcuded.

Whats the price of a phone call?

Status:
Complete
Description:

In January of 2007 a team  from the Pink Ribbon Foundation Malaysia (Breast Cancer Foundation,Malaysia) set out to Climb Mt. Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Southern Hemisphere, as a symbolic message to cancer survivors in Malaysia (and elsewhere) that life is worth living & fighting for whatever the circumstances.  Each one of the team members' lives had been affected by the disease both directly (team leader Rene'e is a cancer survivor) & indirectly.  Each had a mission to accomplish both as a team & as individuals.

We had the privilege of providing them with back up power with our solar chargers.  Although power was available at various junctures, a back up was necessary to cater for Murphy's law.  They embarked with 4 units.  However the returned with only 3.... and cash from their guide who immediately saw the value of the charger.  Up there (more than 22,831 ft above sea level) what is the price of a phone call when you REALLY need it?

Check out their story at :

http://www.pride.org.my/cwp07_overview.php

My personal & company motto is "Saving the Planet, One Day at a time".  Sometimes that means helping someone else share THEIR message of hope and action so that others maybe inspired to make a difference.

PS we have to thank the telco that sponsored the satellite phones.  We wouldn't have had the opportunity to help if they hadn't lost their solar chargers!
