Leonardo DiCaprio's "The 11th Hour" is a documentary concerning the environmental crises caused by human actions and calls for restorative action through a reshaping of human activity.
The mission of our community is to inspire action at every level: from
individual action, up through our communities, to the state, national
and international level. The actions are all shifting our civilization
to a sustainable future. Let's work and take action together. The time is now. The hope is you. Let's begin.
I am the process of creating a "What you can start doing..." list to post on the side of my white panel van that my boyfriend and I share. This is the best way I can think of to get people started down a path of change. Aside from that I have been buying everything possible from local sources and organically when possible (If it's local organic).
It's important to my family and I to do this right...so we are taking every precaution possible to keep from omitting unessesary Co2 into the enviroment or waste energy, matirials, or water. We recycle, have a compst heap, are working on a vegetable garden, switched our lightbulbs to compact flourescent ones, are "shopping green", keep the cars maintained and use them as alittle as possible, shortened showering time, unplug and turn off everything and anything not in use, have our guests use the recycling bins instead of the trashcan, open the windows and turn off the cooling in good weather, try and use lamps instead of overhead lights, wash cloths in cold water, walk and bikeride for fun and when it's practical, shut down computers after every use, and don't run the water while shaving or brushing our teeth. All of these things are really simple and small and save thousands of pounds of CO2 from entering the atmosphere, plus thousands of dollars ever year.
Over the last few years, concerns about our diet, how our food is produced and how it reaches us have become increasingly important. The evidence for and the effect of climate change on our lives has also become much more prominent.
Food is one of the necessities of life. The production, processing, distribution and sale of our food has a major impact on every aspect of our lives: our health; our economy; our landscape; the environment; animal welfare; etc…
This site has been created to help us all choose and source food which is produced as sensitively and ethically as possible with regard to all the above considerations
There is an AWESOME Neighborhood CO-OP in Carbondale. They purchased $71,000 worth of goods from LOCAL farmers in 2007, and they have bigger plans for 2008. They sell a plethora of organic goods and lots of supplies (nutritional, educational, and otherwise) for those of us who have choosen a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. Co-Op shoppers are rewarded with charity monies (wooden nickels) when they bring their re-usable grocery bags. The Co-Op encourages active community participation with regular events open to everyone, and every shopper is invited to become an owner by the friendly and knowledgeable staff.
