Get rid of the screen savers!

Status:
In Progress
Description:

Yes, they can be adorable, fun, and even relaxing. However, while you're glancing at puppies, your favorite movies, or white sand beaches, stop to consider this: screen savers use energy while you're not using your computer! Forecast Earth correspondent Don Willmott explains, "in the good old days of tube monitors, screen savers such as those unforgettable flying toasters were invented to prevent burn-in, a permanent shadow branded into the phosphors of your monitor by a static image…well, flat-screen LCD monitors don't burn in.”  So, take action and when not using your computer either put it to sleep (yep, that’s what that function is for) or turn it off and unplug it.

No more bottled water at my food cooperative

Status:
In Progress
Description:

Obtaining water, packaging water, the content (plastic mostly) that water is housed in, and the weight of water as it relates to transportation and footprint on the climate crisis is ridiculous.  Most countries and most people have little or no access to clean water whatsoever.  Here is America we do not have an endless supply but we sometimes treat it like we do.  Worst off, we take water from far reaching corners of the world where water is scarce, and ship it to our markets, gas stations, you name it.  Brands like Eternal water from Fiji, Evian from France, etc.  Even water that is bottled 100 miles away and brought to market is not responsible action on our part and not fair to the environment.  To this end, my cooperative, as most grocery stores have water machines that distribute filtered, LOCAL water.  My action is to eliminate all bottled water (i.e.-primarily gallons and hand held plastic bottles) and sell recycled, renewable containers and encourage people to use these or bring in their own containers if they want water.  My next action is in my bulk department where I plan to reward with money off of a purchase when people bring in their own bags, jars, etc.  That is down the line...

Encourage this initiative by emailing me at casey.f@weaverstreetmarket.coop.  The more advocacy I have, the more ammunition I have to present this to the board and get this passed.  Thank you!

Change the job for one with much less environmental footprint

Status:
Complete
Description:

I changed my working place as a postman. Now I work five minutes from home with the bike. Before I always had to take the public transport for 45 minutes. Therefore: now I am more energy efficient, I live a place free in the saturated public transport of Zürich during the peak times, I save money of the public transport daily ticket and I can stand for the bike as a real alternative for daily conmuting.

Besides, in this new working place I don't bring the letters with a motorbike, but I do it walking. So, I stop producing and breathing much aditional pollution.

GREEN THE MARINA!!! (Kinkaid)

Status:
In Progress
Description:
Kinkaid Marina is located on beautiful Kinkaid Lake in Southern Illinois.  The lake is situated comfortably within the boundaries of the Shawnee National Forest, the lake is a haven for nature-lovers, conservationist, and most importantly, wildlife.  "The Marina" is the only privately owned property on the lake.  Until now, they haven't been very environmentally friendly, but we're working on it.  There are many recreational fishing clubs that volunteer regularly to clean-up the lake, and they do a wonderful job.  The plan is to start with a recycling program.  Then we'll move on to energy-efficiency.  There is a lot that can be done here, and if there are any suggestions, please let me know so I can pass them on to the Marina's owner.  GREEN THE MARINA!!!

As a Green warrior, it really hurts me to see the many unconscious decisions some no so green people make dailyThe amount of waste being generated per week is insane.I have contacted the Metropolitan Utilities District (MUD) to get a recycle program going in our subdivision. No word from them just yet, but nothing stops a warrior!! I have also installed the "I am green" application in my FaceBook to raise awareness among friends and encourage them to take action. Stay tuned. So much more is going on. As these other actions come to completion, I’ll be happy to share those as well.
